A Thousand Stars
A 100 word short story
Tonight the sky is clear.
The same stars under which we met watch on, indifferent to our breaking hearts.
“Don’t you love me?”
I have no answer. We never do.
Shaking my head, I look to the eternal blanket of tumbling galaxies and know I will never forget this terrible pain I am causing.
Shattering a once unbreakable bond.
She is leaving.
I should follow.
Cry out.
Yet I do nothing but watch her fade into the shadows.
A bitter regret to haunt my future.
Leaving this lonely man, walking a sorrowful path, where only endless stars will forever follow.
So, back to my day job with a slight change of pace this week. Mostly to prove I wasn’t always the weary cynic you see before you now and once had romantic dreams in my head, here is my story for Valentines Day.
However, as my darker side is pretty much always to the fore, it does end on the melancholy note of the permanent scars left on our hearts from hasty decisions.
It’s also another story inspired by the title of a song from the greatest first album ever, “The Crossing” by Big Country.
Thanks for reading. Until next time.

Oh, Dan! Such a deep, aching sadness told with remarkable simplicity. I felt the weight of the silence between those two. It’s a truly beautiful yet painfully honest glimpse into love’s most difficult moments.
"...stars under which we met watch on, indifferent to our breaking hearts." It is good to be reminded now and then, Daniel. Thank you. Such monumental emotions we humans feel, earth-shattering, heart-breaking, head-exploding. Then we go out on the porch, look up at the incomprehensible vastness of the night sky and ask ourselves what is the significance of all this drama down here on this tiny speck of rock?
