She holds his hand.
Her bitter tears long dried.
Hope fading he will ever return from this endless sleep.
Yet he is far away.
Standing with armour brightly burnished. Golden sword raised.
His brave companions by his side.
Battle hardened. Weapons ready.
The portal breaking. Ancient wards finally weakening.
Monsters most foul, pound on the doorway. Their black and red tentacles, cloaked in spikes, ripe with poison, desperate to find a way through. To feast on human flesh.
These spirit warriors, who’s bodies lie withering in hospital beds, are our last hope.
Cracks appear.
A triumphant roar.
They are coming.
Well, it’s certainly good to be back writing 100 word stories again! Even if it is only for a wee while! Either way, eldritch horror certainly seems to be on my mind at the moment.
Also, a big hello to my new subscribers. Lovely to have you all here.
A couple of people to thank this week. Firstly a very special thanks to the wonderful for the prompt to write a 100 word short story based on the word, “Coma” : -
I had two ideas, but went with this one. I might publish the other story if I can actually think of a decent ending!
Then a shout out to the great for reminding me of the British horror author Graham Masterton who, along with Caro’s prompt, made me think back to Masterton’s Night Warriors stories from forty years ago on which this short tale ended up being loosely based.
Anyway, I’m not sure if this is the start of a new series, but I hope you enjoyed it.
Thanks for reading. Until next time.
This was a great read! The narrative of warriors about to make a final stands against creatures of the dark provides both thrill and tension, and reminds me of the final journal entry of Balin in Moria. Moreover, the concept of comatose individuals forced to fight a losing war on another plane of existence flips the age old dream warrior fantasy on its head, as what should be a means of escapism from the mundane is turned nightmarish by overwhelming odds and deathly stakes. Excellent work!
Oh man, this is excellent, Dan. I love stories about the forces of good and evil squaring off. Yours is so well captured and so suspenseful!
Also, I saw what you meant regarding our stories, ha!
