Jeremiah patiently watched the minutes creep past on the old grandfather clock that had stood in his house for generations.
He was ready.
Judgement Day was finally at hand.
Family and friends had joyously gathered.
They sang songs, feasted and drank the blessed wine.
All was now silent.
Except for the pendulum ticking.
As the hour struck, he closed his eyes, grasped the Book, and waited.
And waited.
He let out the breath he’d been holding and looked around.
Only the frozen rictus grins of twisted, blackened corpses greeted him.
“Oh god,” he whispered.
The book fell from his hands.

As I’m still working my way through my Pet Sematary article, pondering faith, belief and the darkness of one’s soul, this story came pretty easily.
